With everything that’s been going on in the world lately, I haven’t felt compelled to write much about the kittens…their progress seems somewhat small and insignificant compared to the violence, death, and destruction happening across the country. It angers and saddens me to know that racism and police brutality is still as present as it’s ever been in the United States, and it’s only getting worse.

Making Progress

Making Progress

This week has been filled with some pretty important milestones for the kittens, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. Though I have a while to go before the kitties are completely stable and independent, it’s comforting to know that they’ve gone from tiny, malnourished, hypothermic babies weighing a mere three to four ounces to their now chubby, active, and curious selves (who now weigh in at about 13 to 15 ounces). They’re almost one whole pound!

Due to their fragility, newborn kittens require around-the-clock care and attention. I felt like I’d messed up by taking the kittens inside; I worried the mother cat was looking for them and knew she could take better care of them. Everything I read online said kittens have the best chance of survival if they’re left with their mother for at least the first four weeks.

Newfound Motherhood

Two weeks ago, a feral cat birthed a litter of four kittens in my backyard. Two days later I became their new mother. I’m starting this blog to tell people more about the kittens’ progress and growth, so others can hear about their journey (and mine). I think many people assume raising kittens is cute, with a lot of playtime, cuddles, and catnaps. But there is so much more to it than that. It’s an around-the-clock job that requires true dedication and very little rest.
